Karen Hunter and team react to Joaquin Phoenix‘s speech at the BAFTA awards.
Phoenix won best actor for Joker at the 2020 British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, the British version of the Oscars. During his acceptance speech Phoenix went in on the lack of non-white nominees at the BAFTA, and the Oscars, and others forums that celebrate contributions to the arts, as well as the lack of representation on movie sets. Speaking to an overwhelmingly white audience, you could hear a pin drop as Phoenix spoke, telling the room, “It is the obligation of the people that have created, and perpetuate, and benefit from a system of oppression to be the ones that dismantle it, so that’s on us.”
