Longtime ABC journalist and The View producer/co-host Barbara Walters has revealed on the Oprah Winfrey Show (to air Tuesday May 6) that she had a love affair with former Massachusetts Senator Edward Brooke, who was married at the time, for several years starting in the late 1960s when she was co-host of NBC’s Today show.
Ms. Walters said she was reluctant about going public with the affair at the time fearing “it would have ruined my career and his.”
Sen. Brooke was the first African American popularly elected to the senate. He served two terms. The affair ended shortly before Sen. Brooke lost his bid for a third term in 1978.
