Boxing legend Pernell Whitaker was killed on Sunday night after he was struck by a car as he crossed the street in Virginia Beach.
The driver remained on the scene and was not charged, though the incident remains under investigation.

As an amateur, the Virginia native won a silver medal at the World Boxing Championships in 1982, gold at the Pan-American Games in 1983, and gold at the 1984 Olympics in L.A. He kicked off his pro boxing career in 1984 alongside Evander Holyfield. He held titles in lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight divisions. He ended his career with a record of 40 wins, 4 draws, and 1 loss. 17 of his wins were by knockout.
Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker is survived by his 5 children. He was 55.
