The Louisville Metro Police Department has come to a financial settlement with the family of Breonna Taylor for a reported $12 million.
“The city’s response in this case has been delayed and it’s been frustrating, but the fact that they’ve been willing to sit down and talk significant reform was a step in the right direction and hopefully a turning point,” said Taylor family attorney Sam Aguilar.
The family, along with Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, made the formal announcement Tuesday, September 15.
On March 13 members of the Louisville Police Department, serving a no-knock warrant, shot Taylor eight times as she woken from her bed.
It was later revealed that police lied in their warrant application. One of the three officers involved, Brett Hankison, was fired in June. The other two, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, were placed on administrative leave. Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has been slow to file charges against the officers.Six months have passed since Taylor was killed and the investigation is still ongoing. Cameron has yet to announce a timetable when charges, if any, will be filed against the police officers.
Last week Cameron released a statement regarding the timeline of the investigation, “My office is continually asked about a timeline regarding the investigation into the death of Ms. Breonna Taylor. An investigation, if done properly, cannot follow a specific timeline.”
